Progress Report 12

Thank God! I’ve finally finished doing the major edit of the first seven chapters. Yes I did say seven. As I predicted in the previous progress report, I ended up amalgamating two short chapters into one, as well as adding just over five hundred extra words, which means that the word count now stands at 19,792.

During the previous four a half days of total concentration on my part, a thought occurred to me. Why in the name of everything we hold dear as writers would any of us wish to become a full-time editor? It’s bad enought doing it for a few days. But to do it for a living? I don’t think so. Anyone contemplating it as a career, is either totally insane, or they are some kind of control freak on a power or ego trip, or maybe both, who loves the idea of tearing the product of someone’s hard work to shreds. Perhaps secretly they get their rocks off by inflicting doubt and angst in the minds of the unsuspecting writer in their clutches. Maybe editors are recruited from the ranks of trolls, pedants and armchair critics. Who knows?

Anyway, enough of that. Now its on to the next chapter and episode in the story. After I’ve had lunch and taken a much needed break to ready myself…

More later.

  1. I have a friend that is an author, but she does editing work for her publisher. She claims it is over half of her income or more. That is why she does it. I wouldn’t want the job. Yes, I did Tweet for you.

  2. LOL! What a thought, but I agree with you. having said that, a friend of mine, also a writer, has just started working as an editor, and she’s damn good at it! It takes a certain skill, I think, which I definitely don’t have!
