A Film Too Far?

Why is it that Hollywood insists on churning out lousy sequels to formerly successful franchises?

I finally got round to watching Predators (2010) yesterday afternoon. I freely admit that I thoroughly enjoyed the completely over the top testosterone fed action of the original film Predator (1987) starring Arnold Schwarzenneger, and later, Predator 2 (1990) starring Danny Glover. For what they are they simply cannot be bettered.

Having said that, what possessed the studio bosses to allow the making of Predators, starring Adrien Brody, Alice Braga, Danny Trejo, Walt Goggins, Oleg Taktarov, Topher Grace, Mahershalalhashbaz Ali, Louis Ozawa Changchien and Laurence Fishburn. None of them can be considered box office by any stretch of the imagination, unlike Arnold and Danny. At best they are all bit part actors. Brody, Trejo and Fishburn were the only ones I recognised. Even the individuals responsible for the film – Nimrod Antal (Director) and Robert Rodriguez (Producer) are hardly top draw.

As for Predators being advertised as ‘The Sequel The Original Deserves’, I don’t think so. Any action film that takes twenty minutes to finally get going is guaranteed to fail.
