How many more times must I state that when it comes to love scenes, it’s always better to suggest than describe!!!

Class – sit up straight and pay attention!!!

Have We Had Help?

adriana-lima

Ok, so does this stunningly beautiful young woman meet with your approval? She does? Good, now that I have your complete and undivided attention, let’s get on with what I want to talk about today.

I know I tend to bang on about what’s acceptable in literature and whats not when it comes to sex scenes. But let’s face it, the vast majority of writers don’t think before they write! When it comes to a lot of the books on offer under the heading of romance, what you get these days is pure porn. If only the authors concerned had taken the time and trouble to think things through first. Instead of being in such a blinding hurry to get themselves noticed for all the wrong reasons. There really is no need to resort to spelling out every detail in such an explicit manner as some writers tend to do…

Are Books Better than Tablets for Children?

So long as they’re reading, does it matter???

Jemsbooks

This is an excellent question as today’s technology is so important to all of us. I read an interesting and informative post, Study: Books May Foster Bonding Better Than Tablets by Linda Carroll that was published in New Hampshire Union Leader on October 1, 2019.

Here are some excerpts from this excellent post: Parents and children both appear more engaged when stories are read from a book, researchers say.

Toddlers appear to be much more engaged with their parents when stories are read to them from books rather than digital tablets, a new study finds.

It may be that when parents and toddlers engage over a tablet, it might be harder for them to have moments of connection, said Dr. Tiffany Munzer, a developmental and behavioral pediatrician at the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital and the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor who led the study.

Tablets don’t seem to promote…

Has George Orwell’s nightmare vision finally become reality?

Willl government do the decent thing and honour the result of the Referendum?

Have We Had Help?

big-brother-1984

To my way of thinking George Orwell’s dystopian nightmare vision of society, ‘Nineteen Eighty-Four’ is on the verge of becoming the norm.

Instead of his fictitious character ‘Big Brother’ being in charge, dictating what will happen, whether we like it or not each and every one of us are being controlled by ‘Big Business’ in its many forms, largely thanks to their sycophantic enforcers – our current crop of politicians, who make up the worst parliament since the English Civil War!!!

There was a time not too many decades ago when the business community looked after its lifelong workforce by rewarding their loyalty, often working in conjunction with the various Unions to improve the worker’s lot. No longer.

These days what passes for the union movement in many western nations is largely toothless.

At one time there used to be a marked difference between political party’s. Here in the UK…

Sevilla and a Nobel Betrayed

Sevilla and a Nobel Betrayed

More from our man in Malta – Justin Fenech

The Champagne Epicurean

How more like a clear blue sky emerging from the cracks of dawn the Moorish Alcazar appeared in comparison to the dark night of the cathedral.

The cathedral of Sevilla – you’re often reminded it is one of the biggest in the world – is politics. Faith is enslaved to the earthly ambitions of man. I have little sympathy to the veiling paws of faith, however, it felt almost pitiful to see it relegated to a mere house toy in the terrestrial house of god.

Here is a cathedral meant to impose, to silence, to remind you of the grander of kings and clergy. Art, architecture – faith’s uneasy bedfellows – were also used as mere political pawns.

Not so in the Alcazar, the Alhambra, the Mezquita and I would imagine all the great Moorish temples around the Maghreb. Here, faith, art and architecture are married to the wills of…

Can we truly afford them anymore?

A few thoughts on politicians…

Have We Had Help?

cartoon-politician

Sometime during the last twenty years, the clear distinction between all political parties disappeared forever. At one time not so long ago you knew for certain that the Conservative/Republican party represented the privileged rich and big business while the Labour/Democrats worked to protect the rights and privileges of the ordinary working man and women – no longer.

Today’s crop of politicians, no matter which of the eighteen parties they belong to, can only be described at best as opportunistic chancers who entered politics to grow rich at the expense of the nation they purportedly represent. Here in the UK I defy anyone to show any appreciable difference between the Tories, Labour, Liberals, or any of the others, with the exception of the Brexit Party whose platform is all about getting the UK out of the EU.

If like me you believe that all politicians are pathologic liars and hypocrites, then…

the theory of you and me

the theory of you and me

Another lovely poem…

The Lonely Author

the theory of you and me

never understood
the theory of everything
yet I am smart enough to theorize
my wine would be sweeter
coming from your lips
the stars more brilliant
in the galaxy of your eyes
no need to hypothesize
don’t always comprehend
what you are doing to me
for I am a virgin in love
since everything is so new
today, I finally understood
i wasn’t born
until the moment
i discovered you

More on editors and editing…

Have We Had Help?

Editor

Editor at work – Yeh right!

For as long as I’ve been writing full time (since 1995), one aspect of our chosen career path has always bothered me. We all know that writers in publishing house stables are expected to apply all the corrections that their editors deem necessary. More fool them!

Why should Indies suffer this totally illogical practice as well? For many, myself included, we parted company with traditional publishing to get away from this less than satisfactory aspect of the writing game, and the often dictatorial way in which publishers rule over their writers, amongst other things.

I’ve given up counting the number of times I’ve heard fellow Indie’s complain about their editors, and the hard won money they’ve spent on their sometimes dubious services.

If you take the sensible decision to go it alone and self edit, you’ll soon find any errors and correct them. Whereas…

Ship your oars

A little light reading for a Monday…

Tallis Steelyard

ship your oars

There are those who claim, not unreasonably, that usurers and those in their employ are persons sunk deep in perpetual misery. Indeed I confess there are times when I wonder if they are not trapped in a world of piles and perpetual constipation. Yet do not let appearances deceive you. I assure you that on propitious occasions, such as when a client is paying, usurers, lawyers and the rest of their ilk, do indeed know how to celebrate.

Thus at the end of summer, most of the usurers offices close, (if indeed they have reopened) and everybody who is anybody travels to Avitas for the regatta. This ancient event is considered one of the highlights of the season. Originally it appears to have been founded to celebrate the city’s close relationship with the River Dharant. Thus at a profoundly moving ceremony which opens the revels, the Mayor and officers of…

A New Study Shows

When hearing, seeing or reading some things is not good!

Have We Had Help?

studies-show

Could there be four less inoffensive words than those anywhere in the English language. And yet when big business and government combine them in that form, my anti BS system automatically switches on. I’ve read, listened to and watched anything beginning with the words A New Study Shows, for well over five decades now. I hate to tell you this, but ninety-nine, point nine, nine, nine percent of these ‘studies’ are complete hocum.

Take food stuffs as a classic example of this kind of manouvering of the general public. Whenever there is a glut of a particular product we’re always told that it is good for us. When there is a paucity, the opposite applies. Have you ever wondered why? Studies show, thats why. You can make a study show anything you want, in this case a glut of a product that needs shifting, or a scarcity, in which…

if I give you all the love

if I give you all the love

Another beautiful poem from the master…

The Lonely Author

if i give you all the love

I give you my vulnerability
the crescendo of my final breath
my vagabond shadow
so yours never has to walk alone
take the beauty of my quixotic dreams
the circus of my lunacy
the heat of my voice
to evaporate your tears
for its you
my love
who has etched
your words on my bones
my goddess of poetry
what to do
my love
to gain your attention
to win your heart and affection
perhaps, you will be mine
if I give you all the love
no one ever gave to me
