Have you ever wondered why your literary work has never migrated beyond the borders of your country to the world at large? When writing your latest story, have you even considered that you may just be unconsciously writing with a specific geographical reading public in mind, or has the idea never occurred to you?
I was having a chat with my editor earlier today. We were discussing one of my publisher’s recently released novels. It involves its main character living in nineteen fifties America with a sci-fi element thrown in for good measure. 
I put forward the argument that while I can see it doing very well within the borders of the United States of America, whether its success will travel beyond into the world at large is debatable. It will see copies sold in Australia and some in New Zealand. Why – because both countries share similar outlooks and way of life to the US. Needless to say my editor agreed with me.
I have a Facebook friend who chiefly sets his stories here in the UK. It will come as no surprise when I tell you that his UK sales far outweigh overseas sales.
Love stories, thriller, espionage and murder, even pure science fiction, find acceptance across the world always providing they are universal in appeal, in other words non country specific. But if your story has some kind of geographical connotations peculiar to where you the writer lives and therefore essential to the story, will it appeal beyond the borders of the country it is centred on? Sadly, the chances are that it will only appeal to your fellow countrymen.
Fantasy appeals across the world, it knows no boundaries – think of J.R.R Tolkien’s highly readable series. The same goes for children’s tales like the Harry Potter franchise (J.K. Rowling). Historical epics based upon ancient Egypt (Christian Jacq and Wilbur Smith) or the perhaps a story set in the previous centuries like the highly successful historical Hornblower and Sharp series sell well no matter which country the publishers aim at.
Very occasionally a well written work transcends all geographical barriers, finding readers throughout the world, but these are few and far between – think Dan Brown.
It is a fact that the average reader is still consciously or unconsciously parochial in their literary tastes, preferring to read works by their own country’s authors to the detriment of countless others worldwide.
So take a moment from your current work in progress to consider what I have just said. Does your story have universal appeal?

Dogfish?
            The sun was shining and the winds were light. Barney sat looking out the window at the world outside. In the distance in the clear air, he could see the wake of a small boat fighting its way across the deadly bar that ran across the harbour mouth. The tide was about right and the boat swung on her anchor with her stern pointing downstream towards the low footbridge that crossed the tidal estuary.
            “Come on dog,” he said to the sleeping fur ball laying at his feet. “Let’s go and catch us a couple of fish.” The fur ball leapt to his feet and ran around the house barking madly at everything in its path. As Barney gathered his fishing gear, the fur ball snapped and snarled at its own reflection in the window. His master needed his help and that damned dog outside stood in his way!
            “It’s you you’re barking at, you mutt,” Barney laughed, as he opened the ranch slider and stepped outside onto the veranda deck. The fur ball ran round the deck poking his head between the railings, barking at cats and flowers, and at the cars as they passed the front of the house.
            Barney hauled on his sea boots, shaking his head at the demented fur ball’s antics.
“One of these days, dog, it’s the shotgun for you,” he laughed, as he stood up and shouldered the bag of fishing gear. The fur ball stood with his paws on the low gate at the end of the veranda, barking at the clouds.
“Come on you hairy mutt, lets go,” Barney said, opening the gate and walking down the veranda steps.
            Barney began descending the brick stepped path through the overgrown slope of his front garden down to the road. The fur ball almost bowled his master over as he ran down the steps at full stretch in his mad rush to get to the footpath.
“Steady on, you idiot, you almost had me over then!” Barney shouted, as the soles of his sea boots skidded on the slick surface of the old wet bricks beneath his feet.
            The fur ball charged across the road and down the grassy bank to the water’s edge. A small flock of wading birds were filtering the shallows in search of small crabs and sea snails. They lifted into the air in alarm as the fur ball charged at them with his teeth bared, barking so loudly that the seagulls overhead changed their mind and went elsewhere to feed.
Barney finally reached the waters edge and put down his fishing bag. He waded out until the seawater almost lapped the top of his boots, and felt around for his anchor. The fur ball ran around yapping and splashing while Barney steadily pulled the boat into the shallows.
            The boat’s keel gently ran aground on the thick shell bank and the fur ball leapt over the bow and into the centre of the boat. He stood there while he shook the water from his waterlogged coat in a fine spray of mist that caught the sun’s rays, creating a brief rainbow.
Barney returned to the shore, retrieved his fishing bag, and then waded back to the boat. The fur ball took up his customary position lying on the seat that crossed the stern of the boat with his tongue hanging out from pure exhaustion.
            Barney pushed the boat back into deeper water and leapt aboard. He fished around beneath the thwart and lifted the pair of oars from their customary position. Pushing the oarlocks into their holes in both gunwales, he slid the oars into place and readied himself for the task ahead. Barney wiped his hands and rolled himself a smoke, lit it, and positioned the oars for the first long pull to get the boat underway under the steady power of the two oars’ blades. The boat began sliding effortlessly through the water. The fur ball sat up and looked over the side of the boat. There was that damned dog again, and he was on his master’s boat!
            The fur ball ran under Barney’s arms, knocking one of the oars free from his hands. He stood with both his front paws on the bow barking like a demented banshee. The damned dog was still on the boat! How was he going to get rid of it? The only dog allowed on his master’s boat was him! Barney reached over the side, retrieved the oar from the water, and resumed rowing. The fur ball was perplexed! His master didn’t seem the least bit concerned that another dog was on board. It was time to find the stowaway and make him walk the plank!
            The fur ball turned and walked back between Barney’s sea boots, sniffing in the spaces between the strakes and the ribs. No, he wasn’t there. Perhaps he was beneath the floorboards. The fur ball scratched at the wooden twist toggle that held the floorboards down, with his paw. Success – the toggle turned on its screw and the fur ball began scratching at the floorboards, shoving his nose under in search of the stowaway. Barney just shook his head as he shifted the position of his feet out of the fur ball’s way.
            The fur ball got his whole head under the floorboards and pushed them to one side. No, the stowaway was definitely not there, perhaps he was behind his master; stowaways were tricky after all! The fur ball crawled beneath his master’s backside on the central thwart. Aha! The stowaway must be in the stern sheets – there was nowhere else to hide! The fur ball curled his lips and showed his teeth as he let out a low growl and stared beneath the seat. He sniffed cautiously at his master’s fishing bag, gingerly pushing it open with his wet nose. Sniff, sniff, sniff? No, not in there either! The fur ball shoved the bag to one side and sniffed around in the shadows beneath the stern sheets – nothing! The fur ball backed out from under the seat, climbed back on top, and sadly lay down with his head between his paws. He had failed his master!
            Barney reached his favourite fishing spot, threw the small anchor over the side, and watched the anchor rope slide over the gunwale. He shipped his oars, stowed them beneath the thwart, and reached back for his bag and his hand line. The soft plop of the weighted fishing line roused the fur ball. He sat up and panted in the warmth of the sun, while he watched his master holding the fishing line waiting for a nibble from below.
            The fur ball yawned, stretched, and then lay down once more to doze in the sun, sheltered from the wind by the sides of the boat. Barney put a loop of the line around one finger and began rolling himself another smoke. The line moved once, twice, three times, then nothing. The fur ball opened one eye.
“Think we’ve got a bite, dog,” Barney said quietly, as he felt for vibrations on the line.
            The fur ball sat up, staring at his master’s hand and the thin fishing line. The line went taught, Barney gave it a jerk, and began pulling it in.
“We’ve got one dog,” Barney smiled. The fur ball leapt across the boat and stood looking over the side. That damned stowaway was back and now he was trying to steal his master’s fish!
            That night in the pub, Barney stood at the bar with his mates having a beer, telling them about his day’s fishing, with the fur ball lying at his feet on the cold bar room floor.
“Bloody stupid mutt saw his reflection in the water and dived over the side. The stupid bugger swallowed half the bay and puked most of it into my boots when I dragged him back on-board!” Barney said, as he and his mates laughed. The poor fur ball just lay there dejected with his head between his paws unable to understand why his master was so ungrateful. After all, he had got rid of the fish-stealing stowaway!
 

The Goblin Tales For Adults

Just a few words to keep you all in the loop. This morning I finished polishing the eighteenth tale in my anthology. I’m about to start number nineteen – probably tomorrow.

As the tales unfold before me, even though I’m the one writing them, I learn a little more about the five wood goblins who feature in all of the stories. Each one of them reveals a new facet of their very being to me.

There is one very special character who has grown in importance throughout the tales – the one eyed lisping raven with the twisted beak – Bejuss. Somehow that old bird adds more colour to each tale as he gets involved with the goblin brothers. Now that he has become close friends with Glob, the leader of the band of goblins, the brothers depend on him more and more. He brings humour to tricky situations, together with bravery above and beyond the call of duty.

Twelve more tales to go, and then…

Who really knows. 

Tagging – love it or loath it?

While the act of tagging someone’s latest book on a publishing site to promote its sales by making people aware of its presence is a good thing, tagging someone on a photograph on any of the social media sites totally eludes me. Why do it? What does it achieve, other than to annoy the person tagged?

It seems to me that tagging someone on a computer, in the belief that it is ‘fun’ is nothing more than an act of vandalism as are the tags we see on the streets of our cities.

The time for the social media sites to limit, or completely ban the use of this annoying pastime is long overdue. An online friend of mine had her name ‘tagged’ on a pole dancing photograph. She is quite understandably angry, and I don’t blame her one little bit!

To all of you childish idiots who believe it is somehow funny to do this, I say cease and desist.

Developing a Story

 As a reader you get drawn into a storyline by what its characters do or say. As a writer, the same process applies. When you are writing a story you have a vague idea where it may go. But as the story develops, it changes direction at a sometimes frightening speed.
You write a sentence or a paragraph off the top of your head, look at it, and substitute one word for another until you are satisfied. Later on in another paragraph, you realise that your original thought is no longer applicable. So you go back and rewrite it to make it lead up to the thought you had in the following paragraph, or you abandon your later notion for the former.  
If your characters are strong in the sense of being well defined, you already know how they will react to any given situation. To keep your reader wanting to know more, the trick is not to make them predictable in their actions. Just think about how you would react in a given situation and use it in your storyline. We humans are largely predictable. As a writer you do not have that luxury.
If your characters find themselves in some kind of tricky situation, would they simply wade in not caring about the outcome, or would they either formulate a plan to solve the problem, or run away and ignore it? The amount of detail you impart to your potential readers, both personal to the character and the situation, is determined by the basic premise of the storyline.
But if you don’t wish your story to appear predictable, it has to remain open ended until it reaches its conclusion. Of course, not all stories have a logical conclusion. If your story leaves your readers asking questions, wanting to know more, that is to the good.
I’m currently dealing with a story involving a kidnapping. How would I feel if I were related to the victim? How would I react? Would I simply wait until I was contacted by the kidnappers, or would I take the law into my own hands, or call in the assistance of friends?
The one thing your story must be besides being readable, is fluid.

Stick with a plot or not?

The other day I posed a simple question to all interested parties who contribute to the Facebook group Writers Etc. 
Here is the question and some of the answers proffered.
Q: When writing your WIP(Work In Progress), do you stick with your planned original plot, or do you, like me, allow it to evolve depending on the circumstances your characters find themselves in? Give it some thought before answering.

A:  I haven’t plotted NWA or the sequel, only a rough outline, so it takes me wherever the characters want to go. Scary, sometimes. 
     
A: My original plots tend to be ideas headed in a general direction, rather than a detailed outline. Some of my characters are so strong and ‘real,’ there are times I take dictation rather than write. As the story develops, new concepts and realizations occur, which I include. I love the adventure!   
         
A: I have a very rough idea of what I’m going to do but my characters tell the story. I rarely know where a scene is going until it unfolds before me. I couldn’t outline a novel if my life depended on it. lol       
        
A: I’m a pantser through and through so I let it wander whither it wills. I have a general idea of where I need it to go but even then I can be seduced by an “oooh!shiny!”. I usually keep the same ending though.       
        
A: I take my outline and I cut it into pieces and then I throw them in a hat and pick them out one at a time and pray it turns out okay. So far, no complaints except someone pointing out that the dead guy was doing something naughty with an MC and it’s NOT a zombie book. AWKWARD!

If these answers prove anything, it is that we all approach a story fundamentally the same way. You can plan till you are blue in the face, but in the end its your characters who determine the storyline in your WIP, not you. 

What Came First, The Chicken Or The Egg?


Most people when buying a book have different ways of deciding what they wish to read.
Some make a beeline for the section containing their favourite genre. Others casually check the spine of the books on the shelves for an author they recognise and peruse the cover. Some simply scan the blurb on the back. Some, annoyingly, even read the last page to see how it turned out, defeating the whole purpose of buying it in the first place.
Whichever method they may choose, once they have selected what they want they open it at page one and read the first few paragraphs. If it grabs their attention – hooks them – they purchase it and take it home. 
Sadly today very few bother with new exciting authors, preferring to stick with who they know.
However, precious few readers seldom give a moment’s thought to how the author went about constructing the book they have just purchased, or the thought processes involved.
Some reader’s create informal groups of friends to talk about a book. They all read the same novel and discuss it in great detail. Occasionally they may even invite the author to grill him or her on their latest work.
The mechanics of a story largely depend on how each author approaches his or her latest work. Each one of us has different ways of doing things. But the end result is always the same.
Simply put a story must have a beginning, middle and an end. The characters must be not only believable, but also engaging, whether they are good, bad or downright ugly. Some books are heavily plot driven, others, rely on strong characters. Without any of these points a story will simply not get beyond a few rough notes.
Some authors start off with a scenario, complicated or simple, sparked by a news item, while others begin with a specific character in mind. Some may even use a phrase heard or read somewhere which sticks in their mind as a starting point.
So, the next time you pick up a book to read, or to simply fill in time, don’t discard it without a moments thought. Take the time to think about how the author constructed the story and brought life to its characters, and whether or not it gave you enjoyment to spend a few hours within the author’s mind. Because, whether you like it or not, that is where you have been, make no mistake.

The Good Old Days


As we all get older, we tend to compare what is going on around us right now with what things were like in the so-called good old days of our youth. The members of this current generation will look upon the present day as their own good old days in years to come.
But were those times really as good as we remember them?
When I was a small child here in England during the late nineteen forties and throughout the nineteen fifties, while we knew no different, our lives were austere compared to today. Not everybody had a television – black and white back then. Plus refrigerators were for the rich.
My mother’s only method of keeping foodstuffs cold was a ‘safe’, not the kind you keep your money and valuables in, but a small compartment built into the wall of the kitchen, with wire netting on both sides to allow the cold air from outside to do its job.
My father was paid £5 per week. Criminals were subjected to harsh penalties within the cold walls of the Victorian built prisons. Murderers were hung. The only gangs the police encountered were bank robbers, unlike today. Policemen patrolled the streets on foot, knowing everybody on their beat personally. 
If you were a kid who had done something wrong, you got a good hiding from the policeman, then he dragged you home by your ear to receive another from your embarrassed father, or mother. You had brought great shame upon the family name. Needless to say, if you were sensible, you behaved yourself from then on.
Most people in town still lived in Dickensian style Victorian semi-detached rows of houses with tiny rooms and no gardens. Each of these cold damp houses had an outside toilet, and everyone took a bath once a week, usually beside the fire in a tin bath, father first, followed by mother then the kids, all sharing the same water.
Hardly anyone had a bank account of any kind – why, because by the time the rent had been taken out, along with the electricity payment, and the food essentials for the week, not that the shops back then had much on offer, there was nothing left.
Suet pudding, or spotted dick (a steamed concoction made with raisins), the occasional small joint of beef, bread, jam, milk, tea, cod-liver oil, treacle, porridge, the occasional egg, these were the daily fair in the average working class home back then. If you had a tiny patch of dirt, you grew what vegetables you could to supplement the meagre food supply.
No one had a telephone. Our only outside entertainment was either a mile long walk to the nearest Cinema, on the odd occasion when there was a spare sixpence for a ticket. Usually we listened to the radio.
Everybody lived in one room. By that I mean the tiny kitchen, gathered round the radio, or huddled beside the fire. When winter struck, the interior of your home was often colder than outside. Windows froze solid with frost on the inside.
Could today’s generation learn from those times – yes?
Today, we seem to have completely forgotten how to live with, respect and tolerate each other. Criminal gangs of youths roam our streets, causing mayhem, knowing full well that the police are hamstrung by the entire ridiculous current batch of laws, seemingly designed to protect the criminal’s rights rather than the rights of law abiding citizens.  
Were the good old days all that good?
In many ways, the answer is no. But back then, at least we all learned to respect authority, the law of the land, and our elders and betters. Would I want to go back in time to my childhood? No thanks, except for its simplicity, safety and innocence.
